Governor's Scholar Program (GSP)
Congratulations to the Selections to this year's GSP-Nate Tewes & Jenna Sketch
Perspective by Nate Tewes -
The Governor’s Scholar Program (GSP) is a very prestigious program. It is a five-week stay at one of three college campuses over summer vacation. Many people will say that it’s for nerds. This is not true. During the stay, you only take one major class and one minor class. There are no tests, and it is recommended to take a subject you have no knowledge of or no intent to pursue. Last year’s scholar Will Eifert told me that they even took several field trips throughout his stay, including to a mental institution; his field was psychology. With the rest of the time you just have fun, including “showcases.”
The five applicants for this year’s 2007 junior class are Andrew Horton, Michael Scheper, Jenna Sketch, Ian Spence, and Nate Tewes. In order to be accepted you have to have a high enough score on the PSAT test your junior year and complete two application forms. Many apply, few are chosen. The applications are lengthy and tedious. The application for the state requires lists of extra-curricular activities, work experience, and awards received. It also includes a 250-word essay on a personal and unique activity and a 500-word essay based on one of seven possible questions. Although the process is time-consuming, I would recommend that anyone in the lower classes that has a chance to apply their junior year do so.
The other applicants and I are hoping that all our work pays off and are accepted to this once in a lifetime opportunity. Fellow applicant Ian Spence summarized it all into an awe-inspiring euphemism. “Being selected for GSP is like being asked to be the matador for the year’s biggest bull fight in Spain,” Ian said. “It’s an incredible honor but you have to work pretty hard not to get a pair of horns up your rear.”
