Update on the Mission trip to New Orleans this Thanksgiving Weekend
Twenty six Holy Cross H.S. students, and six adults under the direction of Teacher Dan Trame participated in a mission trip to New Orleans during the Thanksgiving Holiday. The team assisted with Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts by performing various jobs under the direction of CitiImpact Ministries of New Orleans.
The Holy Cross group was divided into three units. One group assisted electrician, Perry Lubbers as he re-wired an 83 year old man's home. Another group was headed by Dan Trame & Seth Fopeana. This group gutted a home over the course of 3 days. The home owner wants to return to this home, but does not have the resources to repair the house. Debris was piled up to the ceiling of each room of the 5 room house. The group of 15 worked with a group of adults from Oregon on the first day removing everything from the house fromTV's to mattresses to personal possessions. All the debris was covered in thick mud which was shoveled out into containers then assembly line carried to the front curb of the house. Over the next 2 days, students and adults traded places so that everyone had the experience of "mucking" a house. The house had to be finished by the time we left or else it would be demolished. The yard also had head high weeds which had to be cut down with weed eaters. This group wore gear that protects them from inhaling the mold and bacteria including protective suits, gloves, hard boots, masks and helmets. All the dry wall was removed and the house was basically stripped down to its exterior and the studs on the inside to prepare the house for the demolding process. Cathy Kappes directed a group that prepared meals for 2 days. Diane Schlarman worked with retiling areas of the Church where everybody stayed. Kelly Bohman organized work groups to assist at the mission and also with the mucking.
On Friday Evening, the Kish Family who came to Northern Kentucky last year after Katrina flooded their home hosted the group for a New Orleans Style Shrimp Boil at their home 2 miles west of the Superdome. The menu included new potatoes, spiced corn on the cob, and several other cajun delicacies. It was great to see Thomas and Amelia Kish who both attended Holy Cross last year while their home was being repaired.
On Saturday, the entire group served a Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner at the Church to members of the community. All the servers wore black and white and waited on tables restaurant style. Around 75 people showed for the dinner and also received food baskets to take home with them. The Holy Cross Contingent left New Orleans late Saturday Night and returned home around Noon on Sunday. The group vowed to spread the word about the deplorable conditions in the St. Bernard Parish. Everyone who made the trip wants to go back and continue the work. Plans are in the works to return for a week over the Summer.
This is truly a mission of love and hope. You can still help. The group needs money to help defray gas expenses.
Please send your monetary contributions to school c/o Dan Trame, Holy Cross H. S. 3617 Church Street, Covington, KY 41015
Please pray for the group this weekend and for the efforts of those trying to rebuild their Gulf Coast communities.
