Hello and Greetings. My name is Rodney Valandra and I am your school-based counselor at Holy Cross High School. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the State of Kentucky. It is my goal to assist your student in all aspects of their person, including physical, psychological, social, academic, and spiritual issues. I have clinical experience in many areas of life issues, including mental health, substance abuse, life transitions and adjustments, family issues, parental conflicts, peer pressure, and other life struggles. I hope that you find this page useful and helpful. You will also find links and articles of interest at the bottom of this page. My email is Rodney.Valandra@hchscov.com and I can be reached at 859-431-1335, ext 199. It is probably wise to leave a message with the front office as well, who can contact me at anytime, in case I am not at the school when you call.
A Professional Counselor can stand in the gap when issues and problems get in the way of life, causing roadblocks in life’s journey. Counseling can lend a helping hand, while providing the hope we sometimes seek. My approach to change and improved health, in addition to being holistic, is based on reality or choice theory, which is a cognitive-behavioral approach that can be effective in achieving many goals and changes we desire in life. I utilize an eclectic approach to therapy as well, using techniques from many therapeutic approaches. I have found that reality therapy meshes well with many different approaches and thoughts, including my Christian faith and Native American heritage.
My services here at Holy Cross High School are part of the dedication your school commits to your sons, daughters, and to you and your family and when conducted at school, are a free service to you and your family. Faculty, staff, parents/guardians, and students themselves make referrals to me, and students are seen at school during school hours. Careful planning of session times is important to not interfere with school progress. I can also be a good resource for referral options outside of the school setting. I am usually at the school in the mornings and when possible, can make other arrangements as well.
Confidentiality is extremely important in the counseling process and highly respected by Mr. Eifert and the staff and faculty at Holy Cross High School. Collaboration is also important with parents and guardians and it is important that I have an “open door policy” with parents while ensuring the privacy and ability for change and growth in the students I see at Holy Cross High School. When indicated and appropriate, parents are encouraged to participate as well. Parents will be informed of issues that could be potentially hazardous to their youth or the life of another person(s), causing potential harm to self or others.
It has been an honor and privilege to serve the students at Holy Cross High School over the past years. I look forward to assisting you and your student in becoming the authentic person God has designed them to be, embracing life fully and preparing for the joys and adventures of their future.
Please feel free to visit my web site at www.rodneyvalandra.com if you would like more personal information, if you’d like to discuss counseling outside of the school setting, or if you’d like to schedule an appointment with me personally. May every day be a Blessed Day as you walk life’s journey.
Parents,
Figuring out how to help your teen can be both confusing and a struggle.
Knowing your teens friends can be a great benefit to you and can help you keep
connected in their lives as well as helping them to stay out of trouble. Knowing your
teen's friends can also guide you in how to support the good ones, and how to manage
the bad ones. Below are two links that can help you as you get to know your teen's
friends and their parents. The first link is a quiz you can take to discover how much
you know about your teen's friends and the second link is a helpful tip sheet. Staying
tuned in to the lives of your teen is important.
I have also added other websites, which touch on other issues as well. I hope these help.
Remember, we are all in this together.
Sincerely,
Rodney Valandra
